Australian baritone, Dr Leslie Flanagan, has performed leading roles throughout Europe, USA and Australia. He was an inaugural member of the English National Opera’s prestigious Jerwood Singers program in London, has performed at the Edinburgh Festival and was recently performed at a major International Festival in Kansas.
Leslie has had concert engagements at the International Messiah Festival with Canterbury Choral Society and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. He has worked with many of opera’s and classical music’s leading conductors, accompanists and directors, including Sir Charles Mackkeras.
He is currently based in the States and is back in Australia for a short visit, where he has generously offered to perform a repertoire of Australian classics, as well more recent compositions that highlight the fantastic work some young Australian composers are producing.
The performance traced the development of song in Australia, from folk song instrumental in the formation of our country to both old and new song currently being composed by young Australian composers. The concert highlighted important works and the great tradition of song composition in Australia.
